A small confusing error... if "views aren't sorting" it may be possible that while you are setting the View to Sort Asc by a certain field, you may have also set the Table configuration to have a default sort which OVERRIDES the View's default sort.
So set the Type to HTML Table/Grid but ensure that the sorting is left at None (so it can use the Default View sort)...
And yes, it's easier to have the page/block use the default.
