exchange server 2003 journaling on a test storage group mailbox store

exchange-server-2003-journaling-on-a-test-storage-group-mailbox-store

CREATE THE TEST STORAGE GROUP AND TEST MAILBOX STORE

Exchange System Manager -> Administrative Groups -> Servers

Right click on Servername and choose New Storage Group (similar to creating a Recovery Storage Group)

Then after creating the Storage Group (e.g. test) you may have to restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service (services.msc)

Right click on the Test storage group and choose to create a new mailbox store (note that it's default Public Folder might still be connected to the old storage group)

MOVE (OR CREATE) ANY MAILBOXES FOR TESTING

Servername -> First Storage Group (or name) -> Mailboxes

Right click on the Mailbox (or hold down control and click many) for moving

Choose the Exchange Wizard to Move the mailbox to the other MailStore (could even be on another server!)

Finally, any Outlook clients that have added this mailbox may have to re-add it (as it is now mapped to a new location)

All of your emails should be fine (you might also test with outlook web access).

GET THE GOOGLE POSTINI ARCHIVING ADDRESS

ENABLE MESSAGE ARCHIVING WITH JOURNALING FOR A POSTINI USER

Orgs and Users -> Choose Org

Depending at which level you can configure the default settings for: The Account, each new user (via Email Config 1), or a specific user (Users)

Scroll down to near the bottom with an icon like a drawer titled "Archiving" Click on this to turn it on or off.

Click Add Journaling Configuration to create a new journaling configuration entry. You must also configure your mail server to journal messages.

CREATE A CONTACT FOR JOURNALING ALL EMAILS ON AN EXCHANGE SERVER MAIL STORE

Alternatively, if you're using a third party archiving system for all of the emails (e.g. Google Postini) you could create a contact which forwards all of the Journal Emails to the external email address.

Note that this removes the need for regularly "cleaning out" an Exchange Server Journal Mailbox.

To forward all journaled messages in your journaling-recipient mailboxes to Message Archiving, you need to add a new contact to your Microsoft Active Directory, and specify the email address of your archive for that contact. Microsoft refers to this contact as the custom SMTP recipient, because the Exchange journaling server will forward all journaled messages to your archive address, using SMTP.

Exchange System Manager -> Administrative Groups -> Servers -> Servername Right click on Storage Group (test)

Choose the checkbox for

To enable enhanced Message Journaling enter EXEJCFG -e from a command prompt.

ALTERNATIVELY CREATE A USER MAILBOX FOR EXCHANGE JOURNALING

Create a user in the Active Directory with a Mailbox to be the Journal Mailbox.

Exchange System Manager -> Administrative Groups -> Servers -> Servername Right click on Storage Group (test)

Choose the checkbox for

To enable enhanced Message Journaling enter EXEJCFG -e from a command prompt.

NOTE: since the Journal Mailbox will contain EVERY email sent or received in the message store (internal & external) you are highly recommended to come up with a regular system of archiving & permenantly deleting items.

The time period should depend on your required organizational and legal time frames.
