Virtualbox ubuntu server 8 04 requires PAE setting

Ubuntu Server Error Message on Virtualbox

"This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: 0:6 Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU."

downloaded ubuntu server 8.0.4.2

mount the iso instead of cd rom drive

create at one go a 4GB hd (all text based, does not need a lot of space)

run the ubuntu setup-> manual partitions: 2GB for ubuntu, 500MB for swap

NOTE: right control key to "take control of mouse" to host...

computer name: ubuntu, user: username

e.g. a LAMP server as a development environment openSSH server I can use putty/ssh (once networking is setup) no DNS because any future virtual cpu's will be static ip's

finished but received stupid error message:

"This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: 0:6 Unable to boot - please use a kernel appropriate for your CPU."

THE SOLUTION

Shutdown the VM. Open the settings on the VM through the Sun xVM VirtualBox manager General -> Advanced -> check Enable PAE/NX Start your VM

wikipedia: Physical Address Extension (PAE) refers to a feature of x86 and x86-64 processors that allows more than 4 Gigabytes[1] of physical memory to be used in 32-bit systems
