after uninstalling using add/remove progs and rebooting c:\windows\system32\drivers still has VBoxDrv.sys VBoxUSB.sys VBoxUSBMon.sys
also, I've removed the .virtualbox folder in each Docs and Settings user profile
restart
reinstall VirtualBox-2.1.2-41885-Win_x86.msi
start vbox, start the guest os, ensure NO filters are enabled
try to "capture" the device from the bottom right ... will probably give same error
shut down guest os shut down vbox ensure that the device gets returned to host os
device manager -> ensure that the virtualbox usb driver isn't disabled
start vbox ensure that device is still under host control add filter to guest os for that specific device and click ok disable device (e.g. usb mass storage) from device manager enable device from device manager (aka unplug and plug back in)
if you use dsl-4.4 linux to test the usb ability of vbox you'll get a lot more debugging messages than windows to work with
(e.g. scanning usb - hot plug device)
