windows replace notepad.exe with notepad2.exe or system32 dllcache is unprotected

windows-replace-notepad.exe-with-notepad2.exe-or-system32-dllcache-is-unprotected

download a replacement text editor: http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html

rename notepad2.exe notepad.exe

Search c:\windows (using F3?) for notepad

You'll see lots of copies... you should replace them in the following order:

replace notepad.exe (68 KB to 248KB) with your renamed notepad2...

  1. c:\windows\lastgood\system32\
  2. c:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386
  3. c:\windows\system32
  4. c:\windows\

add? c:\windows\system32\dllcache\notepad.exe with the new one

watch windows put your new notepad in place (notice the filesize change) it will complain with 2 popups but just hit cancel

You will also have to replace c:\windows\notepad.exe

(system32 files are immediately replaced by the "original" from dllcache)

POSSIBLY: the "file type" gets messed up so you might have to have notepad2.exe in the C:\ and when you double click a .txt from windows explorer you'll have to choose Open With other -> Browse -> c:\notepad2.exe
